Gergely Karácsony Eulogises Bishop Tutu, Omits Anti-Israel Record

Mayor of Budapest Gergely Karácsony published a Facebook post commemorating the recently died Desmond Tutu, without referencing – among his many merits – his anti-Israel record.

“Tutu became known worldwide as an relentless critic of the apartheid system based on the idea of white superiority; with his charisma, his church work, his sacrifice, perhaps he did the most to dismantle the system. But his relentlessness accompanied him when corruption erupted in a new democratic system that abolished racial prerogatives, or failed to eradicate poverty, and he also publicly condemned homophobia” – wrote Karácsony.

While the above is all true, Tutu was also a relentless critic of the state of Israel and wrongly compared South Africa’s apartheid crimes to Israel’s management of the highly complex conflict. He supported BDS and participated in singling out Israel for targeting.
